Why did it take so long?!

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-troops3sep03,0,7512924.story?page=1&coll=la-home-headlines

The national guard soldiers that were sent to the convention center in New Orleans were prepared for the worst has they advanced on the center. What they found was definitely the worst, but in a much more heartbreaking manner.

People were without food or water for days, the sick were near death because of lack of medicine. Human waste was all over the floor.

This is something that you would expect to see in a movie, not on the nightly news. So you have to ask yourself, how in the most advanced country in the world did it get this bad.

Why didn't we have a better plan to get these poor people help, and why did the Bush administration take so long in responding.

Someone needs to do some serious answering, but of course everyone in D.C. is in cya mode so I don't expect much.

Bush was even told by New Orleans mayor: "Fix this goddam crisis". And Bush keeps saying that US has enough resources to both fight the War on Terror and provide hurricane recovery efforts. However we are not seeing those words backed by action. In addition he said before leaving Washington "We'll get on top of this situation and we're going to help the people that need help." Yeah okay, where is the help?

why did you remove the comment APL? Is free speech not a civil liberty...even if it means that the stupid and inconsiderate get a voice

You are right, free speech is a civil liberty and that is precisly why I would not delete another members post. But if you notice the post is deleted by teh author. In this particular case it was a test post done by myself and then deleted as it had no pertinance to the converstation at hand.

anon 3:24,

I couldn't agree more. It is really sad to think that we assisted the Tsunami victims more that we are helping our own citizens. They needed the help and I am glad we gave it, but we need to give just as much to our own people.

I am against finger pointing. Generally, I agree that the leadership by Bush has been less than steller. But let me ask this: the mayor of NO is a demacrat, he failed to deploy hundreds of school buses (that now sit in a pond of water); he failed to rally his police and fire officials (1500 or more trained people). He failed on so many levels its not even funny. Second, the govener failed as well.

It is sad that such an event immediately becomes an opportunity to politic and blame.

Let's wait to do the post mortem until after the patient is out of ER. Stop finger pointing and solve the problem.

No one is trying to politicize this, but I am more than happy to point the finger. I agree that the mayor and the governor both have some answering to do as well, but they ASKED FOR HELP AND DID NOT RECIEVE IT.

They begged the Bush admin. to help only to be told that the proper paper work was not filled out and that a state of emergency had not yet been called. Both of which were shown to be false.

It is the job of FEMA to respond to situations like this, not just local government, local government is destroyed, they can't do much. Also the DHS should have had some kind of plan to get these people out of their or to build tent cities, but no they didn't. WHY?!!

Damn straight I am going to point fingers at Bush, he has taken more vacations during his term than any other President and this is the result. Relief efforts that should have been going full force the day after the hurricane hit are just now starting to get under way. What do you think we should do, simply sit back and drink the Bush koolaid as our country is demolished in front of him and he go to buddy up with his business freinds and to get a guitar from country music artists or as he reads "My Pet Goat" for ten minutes after our great nation is attacked by terrorists. It is time for people in this country to see the ineptness of this so called leader and so YES I WILL POINT FINGERS because there is good reason, and it has NOTHING to do with politics.

If I were getting political I would bring up the fact that he takes vacations when we are in a needless war that he started or the fact that he ignores the cries of the American people to give reason. Or the fact that he has alienated the US from the rest of the world with his mindless drabble that he calls speeches. Or the fact that he took us from a record surplus to a record defisut. Or the fact that we have the highest unemployment rate in 70 years following the lowest under Clinton. Or the fact that he rigged the first elections and their are questions about the second. Or the fact that he skipped out on Vietnam and yet still thought himself worthy of bashing on true Veterans of war.

This is not about politics, this is about the country I love going down the crapper because of one cowboy wannabe and the puppateers that lead him.
